Three varieties, one farm: Keitt, Osteen and Tommy Atkins

Not every mango tastes the same, and they are not all picked on the same day. Three varieties share Mogansol’s 21 hectares. Each has its colour, its flesh, its harvest moment and its share of the crop. Looking after them separately is what lets a box leave with fruit at the right point, not a mix picked for the sake of filling it.

Keitt: the one we grow most

Keitt is about 60% of production. It is a large fruit, with green skin and a sweet flavour, and a quality we recognise on the farm as soon as we cut one open.

It is the main variety by volume. When its season is underway, it is the mango that leaves Mogán in the greatest quantity. You notice the size in the box: a few fruits fill the 6 kg, and each one weighs.

Osteen: creamy flesh, almost no fibre

Osteen covers close to 30% of the farm. You recognise it by its purple tone, distinct from Keitt’s green and Tommy Atkins’s red.

What defines it when you eat it is the flesh: creamy, free of fibre and very fine in texture. It is another way of understanding mango. Less strand, more smoothness. People who try it tend to look for it again when it is back on the tree.

Tommy Atkins: colour, firmness and good keeping

Tommy Atkins makes up the rest of the planting. It has an intense red, the fruit is firm and it keeps well. The flavour is mild and balanced, without the sweeter extremes of other varieties.

Its keeping quality is one reason it remains on the farm. It does not take Keitt’s place or Osteen’s. It covers another moment and another character.

Which variety arrives in your box

All three are looked after from flowering through to harvest. Hand picking follows the right point for each one. We do not take everything on the same day, or by the same reading of colour.

If you buy a box online, the variety depends on the time of year and on what is available when the order is packed. The box is about 6 kg, 12 to 15 fruits, selected on the farm. What does not change is the standard: every mango that leaves here should be up to what Mogansol stands for.
